Webinar – An Inside Look into the Sogo Shosha, Japan’s Unique Trading Giants

14 September 2020 @ 9:30 - 16:30

Patrick-RyanIn Japan, half a dozen “General Trading Companies” or “Sōgō Shōsha” have been among the most influential players in both foreign as well as domestic trade for decades. Marubeni, Mitsubishi, Mitsui, Itochu, Sumitomo, Sojitz and Toyoda Tsusho are true trading giants with annual turnover in the many billions of Euros. Their worldwide activities include production and trading in all sorts of products from bulk raw materials to consumer goods and investment in the supply chains of a diverse number of industries, as well as acting as organizers of infrastructure projects. Though their domestic heyday may be gone, even today the Sōgō Shōsha handle close to one third of all imports and one fifth of all exports in Japan, while their global presence has been expanding rapidly.

Patrick Ryan, a US citizen living in Tokyo who has been working with Marubeni Group for decades, gives us an inside look into the corporate structure and mechanisms in these unique Japanese corporations and their respective company conglomerates, in order to facilitate business relations between Austrian companies and Japanese Sōgō Shōsha.
